Dandy Highwayman Chic at the Gothic Shop
The Dandy Highwayman AKA singer Adam Ant is undoubtedly an icon in the British music industry. Best known for those shouty rebellious hits back in the 1980's- He created the soundtrack to a generation of rebellious British teenagers. But it was not just about the music, as you know with any great musical legend comes their style. It was this that he was well known for. Adam Ant pioneered alternative fashion on a truly grande scale, the likes of which have never been seen before or since.
He portrayed his 'Dandy Highwayman' persona on stage to swooning girls and raucous young men. For those of us who can remember- the legendary stripe across the face, the fearlessness in his face, Adam Ant was the true personification of rebellion. His popularity has spanned decades and shows no sign of waning!
Now Adam Ant is back with a new album (Blueback Hussar in Marrying the Gunner's Daughter out on the 21st of January). Taking all things 'Adam Ant' as inspiration I have picked out just a few pieces from The Gothic Shop that shout out 'Highwayman Chic'!
Military: There are strong elements of all things military in Adam Ant's style, both then and now. Key pieces include that long coat, fully fitted with antiquated military buttons along with epaulets. One also has the loose fitted Georgian style shirt or romantic heroes. Have a spare Tricorn or Bicorn hat lying around? Add it jauntily to the side for a supremely over-the-top lavish look for your period style!

Celebs going Gothic
What is it about Gothic that everyone just finds so appealing? What is it exactly about this alternative look that makes it so enticing?
Well there are a million and one answers to this question. It is loved by the masses and nowhere can this be more evident than at the movies: Gothic has been in the limelight since forever! Its visually stunning styles naturally lend themselves to being dramatic- making it the perfect inspiration for any film.
Think Edward Scissorhands and those strong mechanical steam punk and deeply Gothic tones! A humorous look into the mix of all things bright and 1950's quaint America with the Gothic.
Perhaps some will remember the BBC's adaptation of 'Gormenghast' aired in the 1990's, we see the very suave Jonathan Rhys Meyers looking the business as the dastardly Steerpike! He wore some very Gothic Victoriana style loose fitting shirts with patent leather trousers among a atmospheric backdrop of mechanical grey's. Romantic with a hint of the sinister too-Just how we like our Gothic!
Film and TV have continued to have a love affair with the dark decadenct look and as a result the Celebrities love it too. One of the most recent examples is Kristen Stewart at the premiere of film 'Snow White and the Huntsman' (2012):
If anyone can do Gothic it's this lady! She along with Charlize Theron opted for a decadently Gothic theme for their outfits on the day. Kristen wore a black and partly sheer Marchesa gown. With the hint of a train the outfit was a clear reflection of the film's dark atmospheric qualities. The feminine elegance of the dress is an added element too with sparkling rhinestones and delicate frills. Dresses are not really the sort of thing Kristen is known for wearing but she looks amazing in it!
Emma Stone is one of Hollywood's rising starlets and did the Gothic look wonderfully at the premiere of 'The Amazing Spiderman' in Paris this year. She wore a stunning 'V' necked sheer paneled full length dress to the event. Emma looked every inch the dark princess with her icy platinum blonde hair and blood red lipstick!
Whatever you think of Lady Gaga one cannot deny that her style is attention grabbing. She is a star who is not afraid to go the whole way when it comes to those outfits. Here we see her at a MAC cosmetics event in Los Angeles wearing a fabulous Gothic inspired lace body suit with oversized floral headpiece. It's daring and mysterious made even more so by the half mask she wears with it.
Finally we come to the Grande Dame of Gothic herself- Actress Helena Bonham Carter. Married to film maker and fellow Gothic fan Tim Burton- Helena is an absolute natural in any Gothic get up she is snapped in. Gorgeous as Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter movies, as well as playing Mrs Lovett in 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street'! Now she is starring alongside Sacha Baron Cohen in 'Les Miserable' in the equally Gothic looking Madame Thenardier!
We look forwards to 2013 being an especially dark and decadent year for the celebrities of both stage and screen!
